Every image that footballer Khama Billiat posts on social media are captioned by a biblical verse.

In one post, he quoted 1 Corinthians 13:4. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”

The offensive midfielder has persistently exhibited this trait, and every photo is accompanied by a quote. And for someone whose personal quote is: “In God, I trust,” there is no doubt where his inspiration for bible verses emanates from.

To show his remorse as a human being, he acknowledges his life mistakes through biblical verses as well. “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 3:23-24.

Before he has been accused of many things in life, including being allegedly stabbed by a girlfriend over child support. Billiat has battled personal demons, including hijacking in South Africa. Age cheating has also become a pertinent question in his playing career. In such scenarios, Ephesians 6:12 has spelled out his personal predicament.

“For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

And every time he fails to score, he feels the heat. “It's only that I haven't found my scoring boots yet but I believe soon I will come out good,” Billiat mentioned to the media. “The demons have been immense. I have in a way lost some confidence due to my failure to deliver but trust me, I am back at the top level once again.”

Before each game, the player prays. “I ask God for protection,” Billiat told the Kaizer Chiefs website.

His ability to celebrate his nation’s independence reveals his patriotism. “Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better. As a nation we have been through a lot, we only have us to better our today and the tomorrow of our children,” Billiat once wrote.

Adding that, “This covid19 pandemic threatens to take away a part of our daily freedom but we pray to God for Grace and Restoration.”

From the Aces Youth Academy, he only played 20 minutes for local side Caps United. Thereafter, he was shipped to South African side Ajax Cape Town in 2010. His August 2010 debut was a win against his next club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

In 83 appearances for Ajax, he scored 21 times, before he was snapped by Sundowns, lasting five seasons, and 99 appearances that yielded 39 goals. In 2018 he crossed the great divide, joining his current club Kaizer Chiefs for a record fee.

Before that, he was rumoured to be joining Egyptian giants Zamalek, or another European outfit. But he finally settled for Amakhosi, after the club manager reportedly visited his family in Zimbabwe.

His commitment to national duty has been impressive. His 43 appearances so far have been sublime, being one of the influential players in the squad, scoring 8 times for Zimbabwe.

Billiat was praised by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, for his agility, and great speed, after a friendly match in 2012. The praise further sparked transfer rumours, which subsided when he relocated to Pretoria. A trial stint at Lokomotiv Moscow did not yield a transfer.

Despite not playing in Europe, Billiat has clinched the Premier Soccer League’s Footballer and Player’s Player of the Season during the 2015-16 soccer season. In 2016 he won the Caf Champions League with Sundowns.
