Winky D (Wallace Chirumiko): Life, Legacy, and the Rise of Zimbabwe’s Alien Gaffer
Profile Written By: Oudney Patsika
If there is one aspect that Wallace Chirumiko (Winky D) has managed to keep secret longer than his dreadlocks, it is his family life. The self-anointed "Gafa" of Dancehall has virtually lived a solitary life, far away from the paparazzi’s prying eyes.

The Extraterrestrial Lifestyle
Celebrities, both local and international, often allow controversy to dominate their personalities, sometimes broadcasting their misfortunes to earn reviews or sympathy. Winky D has taken a different path.
A Cloaked Private Life
The feat to maintain his private life cloaked has earned him rare praise from both the media and his peers. He matches his "Extraterrestrial" title by existing like an alien, hiding his daily errands from the nosy public.
Rarely does he shed a tear in public. However, when Scara, his band member, passed on, he defied his principles and tears gushed out. The emotive duet with the late Oliver Mtukudzi yielded the song ‘Panorwadza Moyo’, a dual tribute to both artistes seeking closure from personal loss.
Born of the Ghetto
Born Wallace Chirumiko in the sprawling Kambuzuma suburb, Winky D witnessed daily ghetto struggles which became central to his robust lyrics.
The Voice of the Youth
At 16, he engaged in a DJ battle which nurtured his talents. His upbringing influenced his lyrics, becoming a whip that turns youths against violence, promiscuity, and drug abuse vices.
Beyond the Music: Social & Political Commentary
His lifestyle has been in tandem with his music, choosing to shun personal beef deeply associated with the Dancehall genre. With a clean slate, he earned an ambassadorial post to encourage male circumcision.
Political commentary has also become Winky D’s favorite podium. He has rarely shied away from voicing his concerns, often linked to the political establishment. Despite rebuke and threats, he defended his stance in an interview with Trevor Ncube:
“We have to change our mindset and understand that the way music moves, in a way it is politics; everybody is there to safeguard his or her territory.”

Two Decades of Reign
Two decades after his debut stage appearance, Winky D is still on course to maintain his reign. "People always ask me what a Gafa is," he once mentioned on stage. "I tell them a Gafa is someone who is always controlling the situation."
Record Breaking Views
His video ‘MuGarden’, a collaboration with Gemma Griffiths, ranks as one of the most viewed videos by a Zimbabwean, having amassed more than 3 million views.
