Zimbabwe’s First Saint? The Extraordinary Legacy of John Randal Bradburne

From the Mutemwa Leprosy Centre to the Vatican: A Journey of Selfless Sovereignty

Amidst the technical challenges of national development, a tale of profound inspiration emerges from the rugged landscape of Mutoko. John Randal Bradburne, the "Vagabond of God," is on the path to becoming Zimbabwe’s first locally recognized saint. At Nakiso Group, we honor this legacy by supporting the infrastructure of the Mutemwa sanctuary, where faith and humanitarian service meet.

The Man Behind the Saint

From Soldier to Secular Franciscan

Born in the UK in 1921, John Bradburne arrived in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the late 1960s. His life was a remarkable arc of military service and spiritual deepening.

War Hero & Wanderer

Bradburne served with the 9th Gurkha Rifles in British Malaya during WWII. After surviving shipwrecks and jungle evasion, he returned to England and eventually joined the Secular Franciscan Order as a layman, seeking a "cave to pray in."

The Prolific Poet

Bradburne holds a Guinness World Record as the most prolific poet in English, leaving behind over 6,000 poems—almost double the output of William Shakespeare. His verse remains a testament to his "spiritual technicality."

The "Vagabond of God" at Mutemwa

In 1969, Bradburne founded the Mutemwa Leprosy Settlement near Mutoko. He lived in a simple tin hut, caring for a community of patients who had been abandoned by society.

Dignity in Care

He was up at 03:00 daily to bathe patients, bandaging sores and feeding those too ill to care for themselves.

The Final Sacrifice

Refusing to leave his patients during the climax of the Bush War, he was shot and killed on 5th September 1979.

The Evidence of Miracles

Subsequent stages of canonisation require evidence of miracles. Several extraordinary events have been documented since his death:

Celestial Beams

Eyewitnesses described his body being surrounded by beams of light and chorused by an invisible choir upon his death.

The Fresh Blood

At his funeral, fresh blood fell from the coffin—an impossibility for a 5-day-old corpse—yet no sign of blood was found on the body afterward.

The Vatican Protocol: 5 Steps to Sainthood

The canonisation process is long and robust. Bradburne's cause was formally recognized in Rome in July 2019.

01

Posthumous Wait

Waiting at least five years after death (marking the transition to "Servant of God").

02

Investigation

The local Diocese investigates the life of the candidate for "Heroic Virtue."

03

Beatification

Attributing one verified miracle to prayers made to the individual after their death.

04

Canonisation

Requiring a second verified miracle (or martyrdom status) to be declared a Saint.
